It takes about 20 years for a plastic bag to decompose in our environment and nearly 400 years for a single-use plastic bottle. This fact shook my core.
Banka Bio, a company based in Hyderabad, India, is working towards sustainable solutions in the water, sanitation, and hygiene domains (WASH tech.) Their large-scale wastewater plants and bio-loos are across 22 states in India. 2000+ India Railways coaches use Banka’s foot-operated toilets (Foot Loo) that use up to 80% less water.
One of their experiments with ‘reducing single-use plastic bottles’ led to the creation of Reebottle.

According to research, an average household in an urban city wastes about 60 plastic bottles per house. Most bottles were of Liquid detergents, floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, handwash, and fabric softeners.
At Reebottle, we tried to give environmentally conscious people and companies – a solution for reducing single-use plastic waste. Our Detergent Liquid Vending Machine was one of our soldiers in the war against plastic.

I worked with the team to create the message around the product. We launched two machines in Hyderabad to collect data and initial responses from people.
Gamify
We chose visual games to engage the audience, especially kids.
The game also had a message in it. We used bubbles as a central element in the design, which evoked friendliness and an approachable vibe.

The team had installed two of these units in Hyderabad to test the market.
In the meantime, the team is approaching industrial soap manufacturers & distributors for a steady supply chain.
We are waiting for the adoption data, but the initial response was very welcoming.
